The Government issued a decree on the criteria for classifying and recognizing types of urban areas in the country.
According to the decree, urban areas will be divided into six types, comprising the special urban area and urban areas ranking from No. 1 to No. 5.
An urban area will be considered and classified based on its development results in the previous year of making the classification plan.
The criteria for classification is the functions of an urban town, the scale and density of population in its downtown regions, and having at least 65% of people in inner and concentrated construction regions working in non-agricultural sectors.
The capital or a city or province that plays a role as an administrative, economic, finance, scientific and technological center, and an important transport clue of the country or the region will be classified as a special urban town.
The criteria for a special type urban area is to have at least five million people, the density of 15,000 people per square kilometer in inner areas, at least 90% of people working in non-agricultural sectors, standard infrastructure works and 100% of newly-built production facilities using environmentally-friendly technologies or having equipment to minimize environmental pollution.
The decree also regulates the criteria for other types of urban areas.
