Breathtaking images of Britain as country basks in warmest start to autumn for years

These stunning images of Britain in the autumn show the Lake District in all its glory yesterday as much of the country basked in unseasonal warm temperatures.

Hikers in Cumbria enjoyed a beautiful misty scene as the sun rose in the sky and burned off the fog.

There had been fears the bonfire weekend would be a damp squib after last Friday's rain storms, but millions of people in southern England enjoyed the warmest November 5th for years.

And the mild conditions in the south are set to continue during the week, with no sign of snow and frost anytime soon.

Scotland and Northern Ireland got the worst of weather with frost and rain as temperatures dipped below freezing. Today there blue skies in the north west as the early morning mist lifted.

Met Office forecaster Chris Bulmer said temperatures on Guy Fawkes night hovered around 7C to 10C in the south - which is above average for early November.

But around Cumbria, up to Glasgow and Fife, there was frost with temperatures between 0 and -2C.

Mr Bulmer said: 'Temperatures certainly weren't extreme. There was quite a contrast really. There was widespread frost across Scotland, northern Ireland and North England. But it's not unusual for this time of year.

'The south east was very mild, two or three degrees above average. There will be another cold night tonight with frost across the north again, with some fog patches.

'Southern areas are going to be cloudy, and that cloud is going to spread across the majority of the country.

'Monday and Tuesday will be frost free. Next week we'll see some pretty benign conditions, apart from fog and frost tonight.

'There are no signs of snow through the next week, but rather mild or warm conditions for this time of year.'
